Sima’s dream: to walk again

Ten years ago Simazile Ntyikwe, lost both his legs in a train accident and consequently became wheelchair bound. This year he completed his mechanical engineering course at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and is now doing his experiential training with Unitemp in the technical drawings department.

Sima became a talented wheelchair athlete at school, achieving medals in his races. He got his 1st national colours in 2003 & in 2005 was part of a team that went to Brazil for the International Wheelchair and Amputee games. Although he is still competing, he does not have a major sponsor so has to pay his own way to competitions.

He lives with his unemployed mother, his sister and brother. The family depends on him and his 28-year-old sister to bring in an income.

Overcoming obstacles

Sima has had to overcome the obstacles of getting around in taxis, traveling vast distances and gaining access to areas not hospitable towards people who are wheelchair bound. Still, he never fails to have a smile on his face.

Our biggest surprise has been at our Christmas function last year to see Sima dancing in his wheelchair – an unforgettable moment and indicative of this young man’s spirit.

Our vision is to see this wonderful colleague walking again.

The hurdle we face is not technology but rather the cost of a set of working bionic legs.

Sponsorship

Sima will invest any earnings from his races in his fund for new legs.
Participation in each race requires approx R2000 and he intends to partake in 10 in 2009 including the Nedbank Series.
