"There is no other means of generating a proper commissioning report"- Kobus de Villers of WSP

We interviewed Kobus de Villiers, Associate in the Refrigeration Department of WSP Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd on his experience with the testo analyser.

The application:

WSP’s contractor did a refrigeration installation for a large retailer in Cape Town.

Problem:

A problem arose when compressors kept failing. Kobus estimates cost of damage amounted to around R30 000 each and all in all 12 compressors had to be changed. The reason behind the compressor failure was disputed by the contractor. The contractor intimated that failures occurred to due compressor quality while WSP suggested that the refrigerayion system was not set up properly, and refrigerant liquid was coming back into the compressors.

Solution:

In the above mentioned case study the testo refrigeration analyser was used to beyond doubt prove that liquid was flooding back. Proper installation/ commissioning can be verified by means of the analyser. Future disputes that may arise regarding the cause of refrigeration systems not working properly can be avoided, as well as compressor damage prevented. WSP is investigating the incorporation of a refrigeration system analyser report as part of their Quality Management.
“There is no other means of having a proper commissioning report. It’s impractical to perform hand measurements all the time. The analyser takes a lot of the guesswork out of the situation.”
